Figma News Fridays…is my only post so far this week! Now I truly know what it is to be too busy too blog. But FNF will never be forgotten!
This week was looking to be an empty one until Thursday when the plastic floodgates opened, and we got three things at once! There are two preorders, and an update on something from Wonderfestival that I know everyone couldn’t wait to hear more about, so let’s get started!

The figmaPLUS series is a collection of figma-sized diorama sets to display your figma figures with! The first in the set is a classroom! The set comes with a base unit that matches the atmosphere of the classroom theme, as well as a number of plastic model kits and paper-craft kits for items that are likely to be found in a classroom! Display your favorite figmas in a lovely classroom setting!

– Set Contents –
Classroom-themed Base Unit x2, Flat Joint x2, Binder x8, School Desk x2, School Chair x2, Papercraft Background x1

*No figma figures are included with this product.
The classroom set retails for 2685 yen and will be released in December 2014.

You thought you were finished with preorders for this year, didn’t you?

figmaPLUS was first showed off at summer Wonderfestival, and is finally available for preorder. With the slew of nendoroid plus products(which are all exclusive for some reason), those of us who collect figmas are finally being offered an expansion set as well. However, I cannot help but feel underwhelmed. The set is perfectly fine, but I dislike using 2D/paper backgrounds when I could find or create one in 3D. The set works perfectly fine as a display piece which I imagine was the actual intention, but being more interested in a space for photography than display, this is a surprising pass for me.

Another thing to note before buying is that the desks come unassembled. They do not look difficult to put together, but if you only want desks and chairs, Hasegawa released a 1/12 scale model kit which is far less expensive. So if you do opt for this set, the extra items you get are the two Di;stages and cute paper background.

Definitely not a bad set, but not something I feel obligated to purchase.

figmaPLUS: School Route Set

More ways to enjoy figma figures! The second in the figmaPLUS series!

The figmaPLUS series is a collection of figma-sized diorama sets to display your figma figures with! The second in the series is a set that lets you pose your figmas on their way to school! The set comes with a base unit, as well as a number of plastic model kits and paper-craft kits for items that are likely to be found on the route to school! Display your favorite figmas walking along the road to school!

– Set Contents –
School Route-themed Base Unit x2, Flat Joint x2, Binder x8, Guardrail x2, Guidepost x2, Fence x1, Sign Pole x1, Signs x5 (4 Variants), Sticker Sheet x1 (26 Signs / Guardpost / White Lines), Papercraft Background x1

*No figma figures are included with this product.
This set retails for 2685 yen and will be released in December.

The second set is school themed as well.
Whereas I already own an alternative to the classroom set, this one offers more in the way of tiny signs and road props. That is not to say that 1/12 scale signs are impossible to find(I know that there is an entire school gate kit), but I find this one more unique.

However, while I may consider preordering this set more than the other, price remains an issue for me at least since with rising prices, figmas themselves are becoming increasingly more difficult to collect. This will also have to be a pass for me.

In spite of my passing on both figmaPLUS items, I do believe that like figFIX, this series has potential. The paper backgrounds may not appeal to all, but I see value in the plastic items included, and if we receive series specific sets in the future, figmaPLUS sets could easily evolve into a must have for certain characters.

The Thinker Appears in Scans

thinker thursday

This past Wonderfestival, FREEING surprised us with several figmas of characters that nobody ever thought needed to be figmas. Among these was none other than Auguste Rodin’s statue of The Thinker because we’ve all seen that statue and though “I wish I could pose that”. Nobody knows what possessed FREEING to make this exist, but it does now, and we might as well embrace it.

The Thinker now has a full magazine spread to show off his pose ability which thanks to his being naked, is excellent. He also features a lovely aged bronze finish and accompanying rock to sit on. I wonder if we have any other accessories to look forward to and what on earth they would be.

That ends this week of figma news! Have either of the figmaPLUS sets won you over? And what do you think of The Thinker?

  1. It’s unfortunate that the Thinker’s nakedness, great as it is for poseability, does look pretty awkward what with all them joints. The paint job and sculpt is great, though. I doubt I’ll get it, but I look forward to the possibility of more figmas like him.
